2026-10-02 22:50:02

Model Overview

The Radar RD6 is the debut mass-production all-electric pick-up truck introduced in 2022 by Radar Auto, an NEV marque under Geely Holding Group. Positioned as a "new-category pure electric pick-up" and an "outdoor lifestyle companion", it stands as China's first native EV pick-up underpinned by a bespoke pure electric architecture. Developed on Geely Group's SEA (Sustainable Experience Architecture) pure electric platform—which involved 5 years of development and an R&D investment exceeding RM20,000,000,000—the vehicle utilises a passenger-car-grade monocoque body structure. Unlike the ladder-frame commercial chassis of conventional pick-ups, it aims to deliver SUV-like ride comfort alongside pick-up practicality, tapping into the emerging segment shifting from commercial workhorses to lifestyle and recreational use.

On 9 November 2022, the Radar RD6 officially went on sale in Hangzhou, initially offering four variants: Pioneer Edition, Creator Edition, Enjoy Edition, and Long Range Edition, with official list prices ranging between RM178,800 and RM268,800. In April 2024, the mid-cycle facelift was rolled out alongside the Radar Horizon AWD variant. This was subsequently complemented by the value-oriented "Radar King Kong" series, further broadening the lineup. Primary rivals to the RD6 include the Changan Hunter REEV pick-up, Great Wall Poer (diesel variant), as well as the BYD Shark pick-up in export markets. In 2025, the Radar RD6 emerged as the sole NEV brand to break into the top five overall pick-up sales rankings in China with an annual volume of 13,040 units, commanding up to 98% of the pure electric pick-up segment at its peak.

Design Language

Penned under the helm of Geely Group's UK Design Centre, the Radar RD6 moves away from the utilitarian, utilitarian image of conventional pick-ups in favour of a modern aesthetic philosophy. The front fascia features a fully enclosed gloss black grille flanked by matrix LED headlights, complemented by a full-width LED daytime running light bar running across the centre—giving it an urban SUV-like stance that softens the rugged industrial look. Along the sides, a crisp, straight shoulder line is paired with 17-inch or 18-inch aero-optimised alloy wheels, achieving an impressive drag coefficient of just 0.326 Cd. Round the back, full-width LED taillights feature prominent "RADAR" script across the tailgate, with distinctive X-motif light signatures that completely redefine conventional pick-up rear styling.

Dimensionally, the pick-up measures 5,260 mm in length, 1,900 mm in width, and 1,830 mm in height, with a 3,120 mm wheelbase. The rear cargo bed measures 1,525×1,450×540 mm, providing a 1,200 L cargo volume and a rated payload capacity of 790 kg. It boasts a tight turning circle of 6.1 metres, alongside a 20° approach angle and a 24° departure angle, ensuring commendable manoeuvrability among full-sized pick-ups.

The interior adopts Geely's latest passenger car family cabin design, appointed with extensive soft-touch leather upholstery, satin chrome accents, and a two-tone red/black dashboard complemented by 72-colour ambient lighting. A floating centre console incorporates an aircraft-inspired electronic gear shifter, banishing the cheap plastics and rough textures typical of traditional commercial pick-ups to offer a refined, premium ambiance matching SUVs in the same price bracket.

Powertrain and Performance

In terms of propulsion, the Radar RD6 range comes standard with a single-motor rear-wheel-drive (RWD) configuration, powered by a Nidec permanent magnet synchronous motor. The unit churns out a maximum output of 200 kW (approx. 272 PS) and a peak torque of 384 Nm. It completes the 0–100 km/h century sprint in an official 6.9 seconds, making it one of the quickest and most powerful pick-ups in its segment, with top speed rated at 185 km/h. The dual-motor AWD Radar Horizon introduced in 2024 pushes total system output to 315 kW, delivering even more potent performance.

For energy storage and range, early RD6 batches utilised CATL Ni55 safety cells, while subsequent revisions introduced 63 kWh, 73 kWh, and 86 kWh LFP and NMC ternary lithium battery pack options, returning CLTC rated ranges of 400 km, 520 km, and 632 km respectively. Combined power consumption ranges between 16 and 18 kWh per 100 km. Fast charging is supported up to 120 kW via DC, allowing a 30% to 80% state of charge in 30 minutes, or 120 km of added range with a 15-minute quick charge.

A key USP of the Radar RD6 is its class-leading full-scenario V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) external power supply capability. The integrated multi-socket power panel in the cargo bed supports six discharge modes (including stationary power supply, mobile power delivery on the move, and V2V vehicle-to-vehicle charging) with a peak output of 6 kW, capable of running multiple high-draw outdoor electrical appliances simultaneously.

Chassis and Handling

The chassis setup represents the RD6's most significant technical departure from traditional pick-ups. Underpinned by Geely's SEA passenger vehicle platform, the RD6 adopts a car-like monocoque body construction (omitting a separate ladder frame) with fully independent suspension all round—MacPherson struts up front and a multi-link arrangement at the rear. While this configuration yields slightly lower ultimate payload limits and off-road torsional stiffness compared to rugged body-on-frame rivals, it delivers supple on-road refinement, ride comfort, and handling dynamics comparable to a modern passenger SUV.

Thanks to the all-round independent suspension, the RD6 exhibits high-speed highway stability while effortlessly soaking up urban road imperfections. Ground clearance ranges from 180 to 221 mm, with a maximum wading depth exceeding 500 mm. Stopping power comes from all-round disc brakes (ventilated front discs and solid rear discs) managed via an iBooster brake-by-wire system and electric power steering (EPS). The regenerative braking system offers High, Medium, and Low settings alongside an "E-Pedal" single-pedal drive mode to maximise driving range.

Cabin and Equipment

Inside, the Radar RD6 matches mainstream pure electric SUVs in digital tech, shedding the sparse, utilitarian pick-up interior image. All variants receive a dual 12.3-inch screen setup comprising a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch floating touchscreen infotainment display, while higher variants add a 9.0-inch full-colour Head-Up Display (HUD) for a three-screen layout. Running Geely's Galaxy OS powered by an in-house automotive-grade processor (8 TOPS computing capacity), the infotainment supports OTA updates, native navigation, full-scenario voice control (triggered via "Hello, Xiao Lei"), Apple CarPlay, and smartphone remote telematics. A 6-speaker sound system is fitted as standard.

Comfort features include synthetic leather upholstery (genuine leather on flagship variants) with power adjustment and seat heating for the front row. The 2+3 five-seater cabin offers generous rear legroom courtesy of the 3,120 mm wheelbase. Flagship variants boast a massive 55-inch panoramic glass roof, enhancing cabin airiness. Climate control is manually adjusted with ample cooling capacity to manage the large cabin volume. Storage versatility is exceptional, featuring a 70 L front boot (frunk), a 48 L storage bin beneath the rear seats, and the 1,200 L rear cargo bed, yielding combined load capacities well over 1,200 L.

Safety and Driver Assistance

For passive safety, the Radar RD6 incorporates Geely's proprietary "endoskeleton" integrated body architecture. This SEA-derived monocoque layout achieves a torsional rigidity of 30,300 Nm/deg—nearly ten times that of a conventional body-on-frame pick-up—with roof crush resistance exceeding 8 tonnes (almost double that of typical pick-ups). The shell comprises 66% high-strength steel, paired with Bosch ESP 9.3 and six airbags as standard (dual front, front side, and full-length curtain airbags) to ensure all-round occupant crash protection.

Active safety and ADAS are managed by an L2+ intelligent driver assistance suite driven by 6 radars and 5 high-definition cameras. The system bundles 12 core ADAS functions: Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB, capable of full stops from 60 km/h), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Rear Collision Warning (RCW), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), and a 540° panoramic camera system with transparent chassis view. Standard electronic aids also include a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), Hill Descent Control (HDC), and Hill Start Assist (HSA), meeting the safety standards expected of modern family SUVs.

Market Performance and Reception

Following its market debut, the Radar RD6 carved out a solid niche through its unique proposition as a "pure electric passenger pick-up". During its first full sales year in 2023, it recorded approximately 4,700 registrations, accounting for over 60% of China's total NEV pick-up sales. By 2025, full-year sales surged to 13,040 units, making it the only NEV brand in the country's top five overall pick-up sales charts. Monthly sales peaked in May 2025 at 1,016 units, marking a historical record for the brand. In May 2026, Geely Auto announced the full cash acquisition of the Radar brand for approximately RM218,000,000, integrating it into the "Geely Star" portfolio to complete Geely's pick-up market coverage across luxury, premium, and mass-market segments.

The primary buyer demographic includes small business owners (drawn by ultra-low running costs), camping and outdoor hobbyists (leveraging the 6 kW V2L capabilities), and urban families seeking passenger-car comfort. The launch of the AWD "Horizon" in 2024 and the entry-level "King Kong" range in 2025 lowered the price entry point (with base prices dropping below RM130,000), making electric pick-ups significantly more accessible to mass-market buyers.

Industry commentators and motoring media have widely praised the Radar RD6 as a trailblazer that capitalised on the void in the pure electric pick-up segment. While it compromises on heavy-duty hauling and hardcore off-roading compared to turbodiesel workhorses, reviewers highlight its refined on-road manners, extensive external power capabilities, and remarkably low running costs as a sweet spot for urban delivery and recreational outdoor activities. With over 90% of Chinese prefecture-level cities lifting urban pick-up entry bans by 2025 alongside a growing outdoor leisure economy, the Radar RD6 continues to benefit from strong tailwinds in both policy and market demand.
